ok this one seems tough bcoz in this one i cant even make a wild guess.
abt Germany i only know abt cars, arnie, and gestapo, hitler, panzer, bismark and nazi (all ww stuff)
so the only wild guess i can make is:
hitler shot the man while riding his Mercedes and the man cried help :D
(can that translate to elf?)

i know a lil japanese,
only german word i know is "yeah"
Isn't it 'Ja'?! :D 'Yeah' is lax English.

What I would say is that when you first learn a new language you learn firstly the alphabet, secondly how to count, thirdly how to greet someone, and fourthly how to describe how many pets, brother/sistors, and where you are going on holiday!

So what is an 'elf' to a German (if he saw it wrote down it wouldn't mean anything, but say it to him and he'll get it).

well i searched the net for German version of elves and came across succubus and incubus (and i thought elves are cute) and something like alb... and something related to nightmare.
cant help but think it was the work of some blood sucking monster!
after this i m throwing in the towel.

'Elf' doesn't solve the crime but give information about the crime.

Once you have worked out what 'elf' means there is a crime to solve! :D

Ok, so some elements of a language are more important than others - your German education was more appropriate than mine! :D

So being 'fluentish' in German you should be familiar with what 'elf' means?

I love Indian trains - forgive my (innocent) ignorance, but when I think of Indian trains I envisage trains with loads of people many of which are clinging to the outside! Its a lovely image to the mind. Believe me, this is what UK trains are becoming in the city centres these days.

In keeping with the puzzle, does 'elf' as a German word tell you anything about the potential killer on the train?

Think that trains have several carriages, and 'elf' means?

Anyway, shouldn't you be revising! :D

Dave
revising:eek:
i havent even completed reading once.
revising is pure luxury.
u have been a student, i thought students (strictly male-only phenomenon) all across the world have one thing common: preparation "at the elf-enth hour"

is the criminal sitting on elf seat or elf compartment.

i m beginning to think i might have little chance with this since there is a sea of difference between our railway systems.
after all in which country does a train having capacity of hundreds carries
ppl in thousands out of which only a handful care to pay for the fare :(

i got no leads on the puzzle.
but if some one did read some recent posts by mr.thingmaker (higly humorous ones:) ) i bet he will arrive at the same conclusion as i m doin now.

clue one.
he was in us navy learning German for some reason.
clue two
he becomes sub conscious after elf drink.
clue three
and he decimates spammers without remorse.

so.
the person who killed the German(might be a spammer) was ........:D

apologies mr. thingmaker just got frustrated since i cant answer this one
sorrrrrrry.:(
