I can see a few complications in the arranging of a group of 9 volt batteries to supply a 12 volt load. If the TS will explain the connection scheme that they have in mind I will be happy to assist, I do anticipate some basic challenges.
Switching supplies of any type do produce noise, some much more than others, and every one of them requires some amount of filtering. In addition, none are 100% efficient, and so in every case there input power from whatever the source is will be greater than the power delivered to the load. So they do drain the battery supply, "Quickly" is a relative term in this aspect.
My new Energizer AAA Ni-MH battery cells are not working well. A charge does not have much capacity and the fully charged voltage is less than older ones. I am surprised that its label says, "Made in China for Energizer".
They costed more than the excellent cells that were Made in Japan for years.
Duracell Ni-MH battery cells have been made in China for a few years. They also work poorly.
