Hi,

If an electrical distribution network is primarily inductive in nature due to the inductance of transformers, cables etc

If we are to connect a generator to the network why would we want the generator to be operating at a lagging power factor?

Power factor is usually maintained at a lagging power factor (0.85-0.95) for the system as a whole since a power factor of unit means that the inductive reactance and capacitive reactance are equal( at resonance) and could cause excessive voltage on the system which could damage equipment.
