That's all great, but the part is obsolete and more expensive than it's replacement the 16F628A. I guess Micochip still has a bunch from the last production run that they sell at high prices to hobbyists.

The PIC16F84A is still in production. Microchip hasn't EOL any of their PICs as far as I can tell. There are still some current products out there that use the PIC17. There are some customers that would rather pay the extra piece price than just spend the NRE to migrate to a newer part.
