When paramagnetic substances are placed in non uniform magnetic field, they have a tendency to move from weaker to stronger part
Similarly, when diamagnetic substances are placed in non uniform magnetic field, they have a tendency to move from stronger to weaker part.

The diagram is wrong because the field is stronger near the poles and weaker away from the poles. But the paramagnetic liquid is moving away from the poles, which is contrary to the property of paramagnetic substance. Similar argument is for diamagnetic liquid too. Members should clarify whether I am right or wrong.

You have it backwards, that is diamagnetism.

I made the same mistake when I read the post.

 

I knew I should have checked the wiki first because I'm always getting them around the wrong way.
