Why would a beginner build a discreet 4 bit microcontroller? Sounds like the slow & painful way to learn about microcontrollers IMHO.

I wonder why the OP wanted to DIY their own ALU? Sitting down a wiring a big bag of TTL is not something I enjoy. It's a labor of love for others.

Don't be concerned about the house idea - I and others helped my supe unload his kit log house out of a trailer one day. Made a nice place, after several months of hard work.

I saw a friend do up a mini-hydroplane out of marine plywood. I think he had to place a screw every 2". This was in the days before VSR and battery drills.

Look at Stonehenge or a big Indian mound - there's no end to what motivation can accomplish.
