Calling the study of consciousness an emergent field is an overstatement, IMHO. Nothing in the science we know so far has been able to even suggest how or why it exits, let alone its purpose. All we know is that we require a brain to experience reality as it presents itself through our senses. Here's an article explaining an idea similar to one that I occurred to me a while ago.
