In this partial schematic, I'm trying to figure out what the intention was with Q6 so I can choose appropriate specifications. Am I right in saying that this transistor itself isn't handling much current? That the p-fet above is doing the heavy lifting? So pretty much any NPN should fit the bill? Or am I way off?

The battery is 12.6V max and the max load is 0.5A

You're right. It's only a gate controller. 86 microamps.
