US Congress passed and President Obama signed the current re-authorization act for the FAA good through September 2017. That Act preserves the exemption for small drones (aka RC model airplanes, helicopters, and multi-copters for recreational use). You still need to register with the FAA as a pilot though and have that registration number on board every aircraft.
Today, there was a clarification of the "400-foot rule," which affects primarily sailplanes and large aircraft. This is a relief, as it would have made flying sailplanes almost impossible.
