I removed the 10k. Just like you said, I am can move the dimmer lower now. But if dimmer is at the lowest end, transistor still does not turn on. What should I increase the 10k to?

If you increase the 10K resistor more you will be able to decrease the dimmer more but not at the lowest value. However, have in mind that if you increase the 10K much the transistor won't fully turn on.
