None of you guys call picofarads "puffs"? I've called 'em puffs since I was a kid.
Puffs? Meh. But I say anything is better than _MicroMikes_:rolleyes::)

Joeyd999 The one that drives me most nutz is when ppl try to pronounce abbreviations for mechanical switch styles so: SPST (like _Spist_o_O) and DPST (Like _Dipssst_) DPDT (_Dipdit_) and so like that:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

After too many puffs, you've had a nuff...
No! That's when I'm just getting started cuz my philosophy is the best type of party is one I can't remember:eek::D

Shortbus Plz think abt it! I say your skills are stronger than you think:)!

It just amazes me how you two go from very technical and thesaurus-ly (new word there) into text speak without ever missing a beat.
Ha ha! That's just upshot of our bridging gap between HP's Gen-X _Ivy League speak_ and my Gen-Y _Textease_o_O:cool:

hope both of you take no offense
And again I apologize if I upset you.
Shortbus you're being overcautious cuz of my _little fit_ on political thread:oops:! I want you to know that had nothing to do with you and everything to do with my frustration with snail pace (actually more like tectonic plate pace) of tutorial! So I'm saying this not as excuse but just to tell you that you don't have to feel like you're on minefield with us:) So anyhow nothing you've said present or past was taken wrong way:)! And I know HP feels same way cuz she had extremely heated conversation with me abt my rudeness on that thread!

So it's all good!:)

Boy, am I glad that the word "metric" has a latin origin... that sort of thing never happens in spanish.... "centímetros" it is, and as soon as anyone reads it, they realize there's only one way to pronounce it... that's what the " ´ " above the "i" is for...
Some words in English are obvious, too - if not by their spelling but by the frequency of us in the news, or any other form of entertainment. Yet, some people in some communities (Pittsburgh, for example) have developed their own way of saying things that they are somehow proud of and won't change. Google: Pittsburghese or "Yinzer"

Indeed, it has been my observation that many eastern North American (as well as certain UK) residents tend to substitute a terminal 'short a' sound with 'er' in the pronunciation of nouns (e.g. spatula='spatuler', nova='nover', Martha=Marther, etc...) Go figure?

Best regards
HP:)

Or, in the case of Pittsburgh, they do the inverse as well....

Color = colla (as in: "when buying a car, how important is the colla")

kcs, Mcs, mf, mmf,

kilo cycles per second, Mega cycles per sec ... pre-agreement, a political decision, changing CPS to Hertz.

mf or mh, mmf, all before the pre-agreement to use some of the power of ten names.

How many dBf is zero dB/uV? This was exactly my question when I read the specs for this:
Hp-8640B-0-5-512MHZ-signal-generator-w-opt-003-nice-photo.jpg

There were many WTF? moments in our learning.

How many atto seconds per second must we use to offset a 40 nanosecond daily drift?

Yep ... WTFO.

Then you get stuck with trivial knowledge like there is 1440 minutes or 86400 seconds in a day. assuming a 24 hour day. Even the second is an agreed upon measurement.

At least they never asked for a rate per fortnight answer. :)

FWIW it's done with 'liquid crystals';):)
HP you should say POLARIZATION by liquid crystals:)! So it's like a Kerr cell only light activated:cool:

Auto Darkening Welding Helmet.

Now this one makes me feel old fashion
BR-549 you don't have to feel old cuz I have old periodicals with ads for self adjusting sun glasses from like 1971! So it's definitely mature technology:)!

I remember those! They were called, "Photogrey" and, "Photosun" for use as sunglasses.
My sister had some. I never did because I went for the max in prescription sunglasses. Good decision. I've been in Florida for almost 50 years and there is no evidence of eye damage from the sun.

I used the photogrey lenses from an early age (I've worn glasses since I was nine and got my first photogrey when I was twelve). They turned much darker that the "transition" or other options available today in plastic lenses (though that is definitely improving) even though they certainly weren't as dark as true sunglasses. There's no sign of damage yet, but given that Colorado's UV is significantly more intense than anything near sea level, I'm just hoping that that remains the case. Though, in truth, I probably have far more to worry about from diabetic retinopathy than anything else.

When I was in the service (working the flight line at Tyndall in the Florida panhandle) we had the option of getting photogrey lenses in our issue "birth control" glasses with 3mm safety lenses (and, given the extreme strength of my prescription, that made them real thick and heavy which meant that they DID get as dark as real sunglasses). But, after we had them, some doofus on base decided that since sunglasses weren't allowed in formation, we couldn't get them in issued glasses (despite the fact that the military optical shop had issued them to us) and they made us turn them back in for standard safety lenses. Gee, no sign of government waste anywhere near here. Never mind the fact that no one would wear safety glasses with side shields in formation to begin with, or the fact that the entire time I was stationed there I stood in formation exactly once.
