I want to de-multiplex an audio signal to one of 32 speakers. Digikey has this:

But this is a multiplexer. I don't understand the difference in terms of the actual chip between a mux and de-mux. If it just switches on the given channel, why can't I just use the 32:1 instead of a 1:32? Where does the directionality come in?

It can be used as either a multiplexer or demultiplexer. The unit is bidirectional.

But it's for controlling low level signals. It can't control signals that go directly to a speaker. For that you would need a speaker selector switch.

 

Why can't I use it? One of its listed applications is "audio switching" and it can take a +/- 2.5V supply which is plenty for my purposes.

Audio yes. Power audio aka 8ohm speakers not. Imax continous is only 30mA.
