Multiple RFID Grid Reader

Hi all,

I'm trying to develop a PCB that has either multiple RFID readers or multiple RFID antennas mulitplexed into an RFID reader. For more context, it's a chess board with a sensor at each position, with passive tags in each piece. With 64 positions, whats the best way to read them all?

For the reader, I'm hoping to use something like the NXP PN532, as I would like to use a microcontroller like an Arduino to do this. Also, I would hope to be able to use U. FL connectors for the antennas if possible.

Thanks!

Yes, I understand it's been used and what RFID is. I'm trying to understand how to build such a system myself. How is the device reading each position? The scrabble board on your link says 9 readers, 225 antennas. Clearly that means the antennas are multiplexed - my question is how does one go about multiplexing RFID antennas? I don't think it would be just a bunch of relays toggling each antenna...
