Mobility scooter potentiometer question

Hi guys, stumbled across this site while trying to do some research for a couple of friends that are doing some work on some mobility scooters and wondered if some of you knowledgable folks could help me with a question.

Some of these scooter have needed replacement potentiometers, most with this model cosmos Tokyo rvq24ys08-03

My question is when replacing these parts does it have to be changed with exactly the same part? They seem quite expensive to me for what they are, or can they be replaced with some kind of generic version and what would I have to look for to find a generic version of it?

Thanks for the help guys

Welcome to AAC!
On some scooters the pot seems to be a generic (albeit good quality) type, with a resistance track extending over about 240 °, whereas on others it's a custom type with a track covering a reduced angular extent. For those, it might be possible to get away with using a generic pot plus a couple of fixed resistors. Do you have a schematic for a scooter of interest?

Some automobiles have two opposing resistances. Say one goes from 0 to 1K and the other 1K to zero. Stuck accelerator pedals are nothing to sneeze at. Some cars don;t have a kill switch.

Aside: The Toyota acceleration issue could be stopped by pressing both the brake and accelerator at the same time and the fault was code.

You want that part to be reliable. Magnetic rotation sensors are a replacement, but not a direct one.

Sorry- I will try get more info on the scooters for you. I personally know very little about them. This particular part is just one they had asked me to try and source cheaper for them as they say they need replacements quite often and pay around 30gbp each for them. I found the same ones for about 15 shipped from the states instead. Which is a nice saving for them, but it had me wondering if it was as simple as trying to find a generic version of the same product or if there was more to it than that. I will update when I get more info from on them. Thanks
