Of course the big question is now: How does this new subscription pricing affect the millions of consumers who upgraded to Windows 10 on the promise of it being free?

The answer to that embedded question is in the user's agreement. See Post #39 here: http://forum.allaboutcircuits.com/threads/w10-forcible-upgrade.121825/page-2 By installing the "free" version, you have agreed to get all updates. If you renege on that agreement, MS could prevent you from continuing to use Win10. Of course, whether it will is open to question.
