IF you have never worked with assembly language before, I would suggest that you look at the BASIC Stamp by Parallax, or the Arduino board. Both have projects that range from blinking an LED to rather sophisticated ones. Both are pretty much "plug-and-play".

Or a PICAXE ...cheaper than either than the BASIC Stamp or the Arduino. All three have active Forums, specific to their chips/programming. BS and PICAXE have wireless add-ons. I'm not sure about Arduino, but they probably do too.

The pics from microchip are fairly easy to program since they are c based. There a a lot of start-up examples available and there are also microchip demo boards that you can buy (although a bit expensive).
