My ex-neighbor had an ultrasonic arrangement that spoke in words how many feet his back bumper was away from an object. That was ~5 years ago. There's probably newer and better stuff now.

 

Depending on your application one would need to know:

What's the distance between the vehicles? Are both vehicles in movement? If yes what's their speed? Do you have access to both vehicles / Can you install a device on both vehicles?
