Looking for a simulator for capacitive sensors

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a way to simulate the directions of an electric field based on the construction of the capacitive sensor (mainly surface area and resistance). I'm also interested to know if there is any way to direct the electric field? What I would like to do is to have a capacitive sensor with a high resistance so that it can detect a hand a couple of centimeters above it. But what I want to avoid is that it will sense a hand that is beside it, so I want to direct the field upwards. Something is telling me this isn't possible without buidling some kind of tube to lead the field through, but than I would, in practice, end up with a capacitive senor on top of that tube since I can't enter the tube with my hand from the side. I've tried googling but I haven't found anything close to what I'm looking for so I suspect it might not be possible.

Thanks in advance
