Some differences exist is offset and frequency compensation, but most op amps should work. It is hard to get specific without a schematic and waveforms you were getting.

I'm making this circuit, from which I get tunable frequency triangle waveform from U1 and a square from U2. I have no problems when simulating it.

However, in real life, this is how the triangle waveform looks like with the LM301. Much distorsion and frequency doesnt change



Yet, the square is good and I can tune it.


PD. I used Hantek USB Oscilloscope.

In real life, your OP amp is not perfectly balanced & compensated. That OP was designed before laser trimming was used. From the datasheet, there is information how to balance that op amp.

You can get away by not using the compensation capacitor on the left-hand opamp which is operating as a comparator. But the second one which operates as a linear integrator, should have a compensation capacitor.
