I have playing with Eagle Cad on my new laptop build .. But I would like to expand the library and need a little help not damage anything since I am new to linux..

Since Linux Mint is based on Debian and Ubuntu, and I've been using Ubuntu since 5.04, (Red hat before that), I'm kind of curious of what you mean with "expand the library".

 

Well I am using a older ver of Eagle cad pcb design program and would like to expand the parts library.

You may wish to consider gEDA or KiCad. They can be installed from a terminal as follows:

sudo apt-get install geda

sudo apt-get install kicad

There is online help all over the place for either package.

 

From time to time I need a new part. The first thing I do is to use Google, and see if anybody else have been in the same need. Usually somebody has made a part already.

Then I download the part, and move it to the folder I have all the lbr files. When starting Eagle, I right click on Libraries in the list, and select use all. My new library will then be loaded when the schematic program starts.
