Trying to design a device that will consist of 2 pieces, a transmitter and a receiver. What I am trying to accomplish is when you bring the units closer to each other the LEDs on the receiver turn from red to amber then to green. Any ideas on this would be tremendous help.

Next try to define the specific action you require, the more detail and quantified information you can provide, the better help you will get.

For example:

How many inches?
How accurate?
How repeatable?
Sensitive to angle and direction ok?

A well defined problem is already half solved.
