I bought a camping lantern from a local shop but the light is really dim and the battery does not last long. Has anyone found a good quality lantern that works well for camping? Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

Hello,

What kind of lightsource has your lantern?
An incadent light will consume much more power as a led light.

"B" is right! Now the questions: What type of light source does the camping lantern use??
I see two immediate possibilities, the first being that the original light bulb failed and was replaced with an incorrect type. The second is that a battery had leaked and there was some corrosion, causing a voltage drop. Those are the guesses based on no information.

Hi thanks for the reply
I just checked and my lantern uses LEDs, so I was expecting it to be brighter and last longer on the batteries. Maybe it is just a low-quality unit or not very efficient.

Thanks for the suggestions The lantern is using LEDs, so I do not think it was swapped from an older bulb. I will double check the battery compartment though there might be some corrosion I missed that could be causing the dim light. Appreciate the idea it gives me a good place to start troubleshooting.

What would give US a good place to start is if you can share with us the name and model of the lantern. Or pictures of it. Was the lamp new when you bought it or was it something used by someone else before you? What kind of batteries does it take? Has it been modified prior to your ownership? Have you modified it? Like I said, info on the lantern and pic's would go a long way.

What batteries does it use? A lantern designed to run on alkaline cells (1.5V) will be dim if powered by NiCad or NiMh rechargeables (1.2V)

a bit of disturbing information: If the TS has used "Duracell" brand batteries, be aware that there seems to be a FATAL QUALITY FAILURE that has developed with that brand: Cell leakage!! I have experienced twice so far, and others have commented, that the cell contents can leak out long before the voltage drops very much. So the leaking cell can do a great deal of corrosive damage while still delivering adequate power. This is a new failure mode that can be very harmful.
