Something like a mercury switch could work for this project. Having a switch on each side of the level feeding an AND gate would produce a level result. You could then extend the level horizontally and place the switches appropriately to set the sensitivity. I imagine this working very similar to a classic bubble level. You could also make due with one mercury switch as liquids will always drain to level.

Questions for the TS:

What is your definition of "level"? IOW what is the maximum allowed height error between the two balls? 1/8"? 1/16th"? 1 mm? 0.001"?

Or, expressed as a line between the centers of the two balls, 1 degree? 1/10th degree? 1 minute of arc?

Can the position sensors touch or be attached to either or both of the balls?
