This was in the early 1960s, we lived in a very rural part of Robertson country Texas in the heart of cotton country by the Brazos river. My grand and great-grandmothers both ate small amounts of dirt (a yellow clay) daily and usually made us eat maybe a thimble full. It had nothing to do with hunger as we lived on a 600 acre farm with hogs, chickens and cows and ate better than most city folk back then.

 

I have heard of pregnant women craving dirt. I suspect mineral deficiencies.

 

Impoverished people in Appalachia used to eat clay for certain minerals. Not sure if they still do.

 

it's because of calcium deficiency. few people love to eat chalk. It's also because of calcium deficiency.

 

I can remember at primary there was this stray cat that seeked refuge with the school. Each and every lunchtime different pupils were elected to top up its food and water bowl. The one day, I found it hard to resist the temptation to eat a handful of these cat biscuits. Mmm, crunchy.
