Can anyone possibly tell me of how to go about getting an audio source out of an iPod nano's usb cable? The pinout for the usb cable is 5v, -data, +data, and then ground. Is there some type of code that has to be sent through the data lines to get the iPod to output audio?

USB is for data. AFAIK there is no way to place an audio signal on a USB cable and still have a compliant USB device.

 

The audio files in an iPod are digitized. It has to be presented to a digital to analog converter before it becomes listenable. The file with the music would have to be transfered into a computer and be played back through the sound card D to A converter.

 

Resuming, USB is for transfering digital data, eg, mp3 or multimedia files. There are no means of getting audible sound from it (although you can get power).
