Dear Sir/Madam,

I have a motor but I don't have the datasheet, how can I test the motor and know that is 6V or 3V motor? I have a DC power supply 30V/5A and the multimeter.

Best regards,

Kelvin.

Most DC motors will operate over a pretty big voltage range, unlike AC motors. Sometimes knowing what a motor was used for is a help in deciding what voltage is used. But the next thing is to just look at different websites, hobby motor websites, to see whether you can find one that looks like yours.

Dear MrChips,

What do you mean unhappy? Heat? Noise?
Oh, works the same as with people.

When you see their face change colour, usually to white, blue or red, smoke coming out of their ears, temperature rise, you can smell bad breath, they start kicking and screaming, it's time to cut the high tension.

As a general rule, which may apply in this case is to use a variable supply where you can bring the voltage up gradually, ensure there is no load on the motor, and use a RPM monitor and watch the rpm, if exceeding the rated voltage the motor rpm will be come non linear, IOW the rpm should be directly related to applied voltage, if it start to drop lower then expected, you have exceeded the max rpm/voltage point.
