How are LCD pixel connections made to the drivers?

On an LCD screen I know that each pixel is addressable via columns and rows. From high level schematics Ive seen online it shows that these are controlled by column and row drivers. Taking 1600 columns as an example, how does the driver actually connect up to control each column? Surely there can't be 1600 output pins? I am having a hard time visualising how this would work. Is there some kind of multiplexer involved? Is the driver just an IC?

Kind Regards
