So you will know how many horsepower the switch is rated for.
With a bit of searching you can probably use the hp rating to find voltage and current ratings, too.
Basically it means that the switch is rated to connect/disconnect power to a motor. In the US we follow the NEC (National Electrical Code) which says that the switch must be rated for that purpose. If the switch is not rated with a HP you cannot use it to power a motor.
