Highway Men in England used them to rob people traveling from one village to another in the 18th century, it’s why my 4th great Grandfather carried his money in a belt under trousers. He saved money while in the Army “The Mormon Battalion” coming back from California when he completed his term, they had a Donkey carrying their belongings the guy he was traveling with put his money on the Donkey, which by accounts was scared and ran away. My Grandfather was wise to carry his money on his person. Eventually traveling to retrieve the family and settling in Springville Utah to farm.

Robbery was a common crime in the 18th century. Highway robberiesoften happened on the streets and roads approaching London.
A robber on foot was called a footpad and was often part of a gang. They would rob people travelling on foot and they could be very violent.
Highwaymen were robbers on horseback and they usually worked alone or in small groups. They attacked travellers in carriages or on horseback.

And, some years later, thanks to the turns of History, a named Carlo Ponzi, showed up to care of the interests of stubborn donkeys, precaucious grandads and an a bunch of greedy compatriots.

Indeed, my Grandfather was born ~1900. Horse and buggy, no indoor plumbing, Oil lamps for lights, no public schools and he died in the 1990s. Think of the advances in just his lifetime.

The 1900‘s is a good launch I’d say to look forward and see an advancement in the 1930’s a slight slow down do to financial collapse then picks up again in the 50’s through the sixties suddenly Sputnik and the lunar landing, advance another 30 years, we now have micro processors and computers along with the internet. Our next 30 years from now will be most interesting as we venture into the stars, maybe even begin to reverse if not already human aging, although I don’t want to be wrinkled and shriveled at a 130 years old, maybe just stop aging at 25 would be cool. 130 years of advances have been very cool, I didn’t even touch on most of the coolest advances either.

In the 1970's I spent some time working in the Italian city of Ivrea. Olivetti had their world headquarters there. There are two bridges in the town that cross over the river Dora. They are referred to as the New Bridge and the Old Bridge. The New Bridge was built during the Renaissance, and the Old Bridge was built by the Romans. To think of something lasting for that period of time in continuous use just boggles the mind.

On another note, I had a friend once who said: "Do you realize that everything you are designing and building will be landfill in 10 years?" So it has been 6 years since I retired and 10 years since my last design was released for manufacturing. I think I can assert that his prediction has probably come true. I can't find much evidence for the survival of the stuff I made.

I worked at a chemical refinery that is now ~100 years old. I was designing, installing and maintaining distributed control automation systems. We had pump controllers that were operating legacy steam-powered pumps that had never been converted to electric motor-driven. So yeah there is a very short cycle of design modification but there are still a lot of very old designs still out there doing the job they were intended for. IE even in the Rocket Age people still ride horses.

I firmly believe that who started the increase was Edward Jenner few years before 1800 when discovering the concept of vaccination. We broke our natural relationship with the ecosystem. Had we stayed in the former status, maybe 80% of the members of AAC would not exist.
