I am guessing that you are asking about BJT.

Let's take BJT npn for example. In BJT npn, we have a higher doping n-sub than the other n-sub. Usually, the higher doping n-sub will be the emitter and the lower doping n-sub will be the collector.

Forward active region is occurred when the base-collector is in reversed bias and the base-emitter is in forward bias. The current enters from collector and exits from emitter.

Reverse active region is occurred when the base-collector is in forward bias while the base-emitter is in reversed bias. The current enters from emitter and exits from the collector.

Forward active region has a higher gain than reverse active region. So, we prefer to use forward active region in amplifying our circuits.
