Hello everyone, I'm trying to assemble this slayer exciter for a school presentation next Monday ( yes. I know I'm screwed!

Anyway, I need a kind soul to help me troubleshoot this circuit...I've come across multiple good answers, however, with no luck solving my issue.
I'm using 850 turns of the secundary with 6 turns on the primary without a top-load.

Notice that the LED is not actually bright ( However it does softly light up RED when power is received.. )
My circuit is using a lot of current, so I think it's shorted...( my PSU says it's shorted if I feed it above 1-2V )
heres a diagram of my initial circuit(which worked when I removed the LED & then stopped):
