ok cool. So I'm planning on plugging it into a IPad charging brick via USB. Pretty sure it's 12V 2.1A output. Will this be sufficient or should I just use batteries

 

That brick will get hot fast. Batteries will be drained fast. 2A is a lot of power, try to find another source to power up your project.

Less than 2A and your solenoid may not work as desired. If you cannot find proper power source, try finding different solenoid that requires less power.

D1 can handle 3 A, and Q1 can handle 2 A. Use heatsink on Q1

1/4W and you need a base resistor for the transistor. The schematic shows PNP, but you need NPN.
