To the author(s) of the excellent online book:

What program was used to create the graphics, diagrams, and illustrations in the online book?

Xcircuit was used to create the dwawings as well as the schematic diagrams. Xcircuit is a schematic diagram drawing program. The home page for Xcircuit is http://opencircuitdesign.com/xcircuit/

An easy way to try out Xcircuit is the "live CD" Fedora (RedHat) distribution: "Fedora Electronic Lab" which includes Xcircuit. I haven't tried this. If anyone has good luck withit please report back here.

This specialized distribution is in alpha or beta testing.

If you are an Ubuntu Linux user, Xcircuit is in the Ubuntu repository.

There is now a native windows version in the download page of the Xcircuit page, see " Xcircuit for Windows (native)". Though, I have not tried it. If the windows version works for anyone, please report to this forum.
