I've seen the C-130 Hercules deploy them for short takeoff but unloaded. During the Iran Hostage crisis when they took all of the US Embassy personnel hostage, they had a Top-Secret Mission plan to land, load the hostages, and takeoff from a soccer stadium very near the Embassy in Tehran. There are film clips of the C-130 taking off and landing in training. Unfortunately, the last training session before the mission, the pilot ignited the landing rockets too early and it resulted in a fire that destroyed the plane. The mission was then scrapped.

The entire mission was complete insanity ran directly from the Carter White House (I patched calls from radio). Far too much security, compartmentalization and fear the military might actually blow things up and kill people to get our people out. We had an entire Marine squadron of heavy lift birds with 2000 Marines itching to help but the SF guys wanted their plan to be the only plan. Their plan failed and got good men wasted for nothing.

The frigate USS Barbey and guided missile cruiser Gridley served as escorts.
