I'm all for cracking down on drunk driving but if a person jumps in front of your car and others, it's their fault for getting hit

Police: Person in mental crisis jumps in front of cars on Portland street, is struck by DUII driver
The circumstances leading up to her charges are highly unusual. In order for a court to convict her of the assault charge, which carries a mandatory prison sentence of about six years, prosecutors likely will need to prove that a sober driver could have avoided the collision with the pedestrian

I agree. Nail her for the drunk driving just as though she had been stopped and failed a sobriety test. But her culpability for the injuries sustained by the person that jumped in front of her car should be limited only to the what resulted due to the difference between what a sober driver in the same situation would have been expected to do and what she did.

Charges to the person hit while trying to commit suicide. Damages to said car, and endangerment to public safety in multiple counts via every car they tried to jump in front of.

Politicians and their linguistic fads ... the most abused word of our current era is probably "equity" ... it can mean anything you like ...
