Hi all,

I'm a Civil Engineer by profession and literally have no clue about electronics/computing! I was wondering if you could help me out with a random question that I had.

What devices are needed to detect movement vertically and horizontally in a digital device, i.e a digital watch?

For example, an apple watch... if you raise it to your ear, it detects movement... Is this what gyroscopes are used for?

Would like a bit more explanation to this topic.

Thank you :) (sorry for being so vague!)

There is a difference between a gyroscope and an accelerometer.

A gyroscope measures changes in direction.
An accelerometer measures forces due to acceleration.

Make sure you know which device is being used.

Thank you! That was very helpful. Like I said, I’m quite clueless!
