I am surprised more people are not using this word more often. I knew the action existed, I just didn't have a name for it until last week.

From Wikipedia:
Gaslighting or gas-lighting is a form of manipulation through persistent denial, misdirection, contradiction, and lying in an attempt to destabilize and delegitimize a target. Its intent is to sow seeds of doubt in the targets, hoping to make them question their own memory, perception, and sanity.[1][2] Instances may range from the denial by an abuser that previous abusive incidents ever occurred up to the staging of bizarre events by the abuser with the intention of disorienting the victim. The term owes its origin to Gas Light, a 1938 play and 1944 film, and has been used in clinical and research literature.[3][4]

Well, doing my due diligence after the fact (as usual), I did find one reference to it on this site. Not surprisingly, by @#12 back in 2012. Long before anyone had use for the term in day-to-day conversation.

It's pretty standard "Hearts and Minds" PSYOP stuff. It's been used in the 'Black Helicopter" web-site universe for a while.

And people wonder why others that do not have English as a first language have trouble with the language.

It would be interesting to hear from folks if they have similar strange words in their country (other than US of course).

UK/Australia Gazumping:
Gazumping occurs when a seller (especially of property) accepts an oral or written offer oraly (a promise to purchase) on the property from one potential buyer, but then accepts a higher offer from someone else.
It can also refer to the seller raising the asking price or asking for more money at the last minute.
Bypassing the agent.
Evidently not legal to do in most of N.A.
Max.

Sounds German or Dutch.

So is this going to be another political thread or a climate change thread? Gaslighting tactics tend to be heavily used in both arenas by the supporting parties.
You know, I've been reading about this for a long time now, a really long time. I really know what I am talking about on this topic and I must say you are just completely wrong! You are just so wrong. There is really something going on with our educational system if someone can graduate from a public high school and be so wrong. There is no evidence behind your claim. Also, why do you want to put a label on everything? People like you like to label everything. You have no education and no chance of understanding this topic. You are a faker. Gaslighting is used by people who are in charge and know what they are doing. LEADERS use Gaslighting.

Right now, our politicians and, "intelligence" services are so befuddled that even they don't know who is lying and denying.
I just look at them and remind myself, "Their lips are moving."*

Change subject: I think it was two days ago when somebody asked a question, got an answer, and then said, "Everybody has an opinion".
I'm thinking, "Why do you come to an educational site if you think electronics is an opinion?"

Change subjects again: Gee, I'm glad Gopher didn't know what gas-lighting was until today. People usually find out because they are the victim. I learned about it from my ex-wife. When confronted with a correct observation of reality, her favorite response was, "That's your opinion." Important word being, "ex".

* Another culture-centric reference. "How can you tell if (insert word here) is lying?"
"His lips are moving."

ps, there is a typo in that screen shot of my 2012 post.

And then of course there is the double meaning.

When I first came to Canada My new neighbor mentioned she had to be up early but her alarm clock wasn't working.
I volunteered to 'knock her up' on the way to work.

That comparison is not even close. Obama addressed the public With about 10 press conferences per year. Trump doesn't stop talking or tweeting.
That don't mean I listened to even one of the Obama press conferences or Trumps incoherent pressers.
