Please forgive me for not reading all 5 pages. I did read the first page though, and I get it. People are taking advantage, and that's not right. I don't condone it. But the point remains; BP took it (is taking it) in the shorts and now you can bet that they (and anyone else drilling in the gulf) will now view investing a few billion into better preventative measures to be a cost effective move in the face of the consequences of the alternative.

Can you imagine the scope of the lawsuit if we had a Chernobyl here in the states? There wouldn't be a soul in the country who couldn't by some wild stretch claim that they were adversely effected by it. That's why we haven't had one here, and I predict we never will. Nuclear power companies would/will save countless dollars by keeping an unthinkably tight watch on their operations and integrity of their plants and people. It is in their every interest to do so.

Accountability is a good thing. Over-accountability, while not fair by any means, is apparently even more effective.

That reminds me of the 4500 NFL players, who just received a 275 Million dollar claim for concussions. They didn't realize that some head trauma causes concussions.


To correct myself, the settlement was for over 700 million.

There must be something they found in the plant in Japan that is scaring people. The Vermont Yankee power plant is now being shut down. It is the same GE type plant as in Japan. They spent a lot of money lobbying to keep it open and just like that, they announce a shut down in 2014. The reason they are giving is that its not profitable, but it was worth it until a couple of weeks ago.

Not profitable? I can believe that. It would become extremely not profitable if the 41 year old, already faltering, same design as fukushima plant were to go Chernobyl. This is what I'm talking about. Perfect example of industry favoring safety over profits ... Because it has become profitable to do so. I say Knock it down, build a new one.

When a talking head says something like this, it sounds to me almost as naive as them saying something like " Today celebrated the first step in our plan to repeal the unjust laws of physics, and right the wrongs that they have caused us all for so long."

I was thinking about the whole issue. Doesn't it strike you that France produces over 90% of it's electrical power via nuclear reactors?

I did read somewhere that Admiral Rickover use to take the junior officers in the nuclear program to a small reactor and introduce problems ... so they could get it under control.

I don't think Ms Katz will be declaring a win for the people when their electricity costs increase. I don't know if there is energy competition in the NE or not. I do recall Consolidated Edison was the only electric company in NYC area. I also know I have a choice of electricity providers here in Texas.

I'm sure her choice of "renewable" energy just might be too expensive "for the people".
