Attached in the north.

Been there. Got stung by mosquitoes with two Rolls Royce engines, and a really bad attitude. Man, those are cruel!

About 4000 miles ENE over the Atlantic Ocean.

The mosquitoes (and the black flies) are awful up here in the late-spring and early-summer.

used to live on its former territory way back in the day... and on the weekends Finns would come over to drink vodka but we couldn't go over there, now it turns out best vodka is french, who knew. And mosquitoes in the forest during proper season are brutal, the real ones

It a country "with a 1000 lakes". Lots of forests and marsh. And at summertime it's warm, so the hole country is an hatching machine for badass mosquitoes.

Dad went on a fishing/gold digger trip there in the '70. They had to ducktape their wrists and feet, so the mosquitoes couldn't go under the cloths.

It is carried by migrating bird, the birds don't have to stop for border checks.
If people are getting bitten I sure your health service is aware of the disease.

This mosquito talk is something that always puzzled me. Why is it that all the northern most lands say. Alaska, Siberia, Canada and so on, have such BAD mosquitoes? Compared to the more temperate regions?

I think it's because the tempered regions have the mosquitoes all the time. Or at least almost all the time. The northern countries have them late summer... During the winter we all forget how cruel, demonic, not to say obsessed, they are. That's my theory.:)

Plus they only have part of the year to feed on human blood, so they go crazy. I get bitten a lot here, but I had the misfortune of going to Scotland one summer and I had hundreds of bites.
Actually I find that towards the end of the season, my body has got used to the bites somewhat and they swell up and itch less.

yes, their season could be very short depending on the weather so they go nuts for food. I was back home two years ago in late May, we went for a stroll in the park, looked like the guy in the picture. They are also smaller than those in BC for example. If you go for a visit, stay out of marsh or swampy areas, go to higher ground and try going later in the season or during winter ;)

West Nile is an interesting question. I haven't heard of it in the northern regions, may be the virus does not like the climate, but definitely in southern europe and southern russia.

I spent one summer on the island of Arran... I will not say any more about that.
