Those plug-in boards have so many stray picofarads that the wiring is only occasionally the cause of inter-coupling problems and signal loss to "common". I would not even try to run in the MHz range on a protoboard.
A really, REALLY good treatment of breadboarding techniques and their pitfalls is in Appendix F of Linear Technology, Inc.'s application note AN47, High Speed Amplifier Techniques (http://cds.linear.com/docs/en/application-note/an47fa.pdf) by Jim Williams. He goes into great detail, and it's a good reference.

I rarely use solderless breadboards, only if a design is low-speed, doesn't have any high-impedance, sensitive analog stuff, and is strictly experimental; IMO, they're not very useful otherwise.
