Hello I have a question about a emf meter i have. Whenever I Swipe the thing fast across the carpet it will trigger the "alarm" at read at 1000 volts per meter. Why would this be happening?

 

The change in static electric field generated as you move across the (artificial fibre?) carpet is registering on the emf detector.

Because you swiped it across the carpet.

 

Your increasing the speed and therefore the increased reading.
