where can this be verified? i was/am under impression that it takes much longer than that for product to be declared public domain.
Ooops. You're right. I did a little more research on this, It's 95 years in the US. Boy, I sure botched that one!:confused:

So, never mind...

A bit of a long shot but you could try using Wine with Ubuntu (or other Linux).
I'm using a couple of Windows programs that way, MPLAB and LTSpice and they run pretty well. It won't work perfectly with all Windows programs, especially Microsoft ones which check to see if they are running in Wine, but you might find with a little searching if the programs you want to use will work.

I use Linux and XP in dual-boot. I don't use anti-virus for either, as I usually know what I'm downloading. And as for performance: keep the RAM high and the hard drive clean of junk.
