If you insist upon 'winging it on the cheap' be advised that a 60kVp, 5mAs capable source in conjunction with an image receptor comprised of a mammography 'intensifier cassette' and digital camera is quite satisfactory for most (electronics related) object cross-sections of up to 10cm sans a 'Bucky'...

That said: The more versatile the equipment, the greater the productivity to aggravation ratio!
