See shortbus we're not so different after all. Love me some Robert Cray and Yes I've heard that one. I've listened to all kinds of music in my life and find something I like in all genres of music. Back when it wasn't so illegal to collect music I would often download complete discographies or at least what I could get my hands on! Still have piles of disc's put away somewhere. Nothing in the last 10 or 15 years though. I remember when you would sit by the radio and have your finger on the record button waiting for a song you wanted to record. Now they call that piracy.

Never said we were. Just different out looks on how we get our news. I do watch some FNC but never at night, Shep Smith reports the same things the same way as the so called Fake news, I like to look at it all and make up my own mind.

@shortbus
Me too! shortbus
Hope that wasn't too political for the overlords. You know their watching! ;) Especially me......Shhhhh!
I've often wondered when people tell me there is a difference between "Blues" and R&B why? sure it's a type of music but it's also so much more. I've even been told white people know nothing about the blues! This is also not true! Color of skin should never place a restriction on what you listen to or how you perceive music. One mans R&B is an others Blues. categories are made by others not me.
You know they should put a political thread in and just place a "Enter at your own risk" warning on it.
Allow swearing and a anything goes if you reply.
NAW! that would cause more trouble than it's worth.
probably be like breaking up a dog fight. :D

They've been there and done that, and it is still making things less simple and friendly as it used to be here. And ended up with people getting permanent bans, because they couldn't tell where the political thread stopped and started. If you think you can be civilized about it do it in PM.

It's very hard to deal with a subject like this one and eventually not have tempers flare... this is a learning place, and I agree with the non-politics policy. It would strongly distract from its main purpose.

I agree wholeheartedly. Even though I participated. Can't stand to see one side claim things that are only a n opinion as fact.

I did say at the end of my post that it would cause more trouble than it's worth.
Now we're also hijacking joeyd's thread
Back to the point of the difference in R&B and Blues

google said:
Blues is an African-American music that traverses a wide range of emotions and musical styles. “Feeling blue” is expressed in songs whose verses lament injustice or express longing for a better life and lost loves, jobs, and money. But blues is also a raucous dance music that celebrates pleasure and success.

Rhythm and blues, commonly abbreviated as R&B, is a genre of popular music that originated in African American communities in the 1940s. ... The term "rhythm and blues" has undergone a number of shifts in meaning. In the early 1950s, it was frequently applied to blues records.
As shortbus said Robert Cray was a blues singer but yet the album was labeled R&B by the music industry.

I am learning piano snd surprised everyone by having a knack for the blues. I love it, but it is lame if you play the notes as written.

When the score goes, da da da da (eighth notes). You have to play it blusey, you have to play daa da daa da. (somewhere between equal notes and dotted sixteenth sixteenth.

Long time fan of John Mayall and Huddie "Leadbelly" Ledbetter. A couple of his tunes that I am partial to. "Salty Dog Blues" Bing Videos and "Bourgeois Blues" Bing Videos And, of course, "Black Betty" Bing Videos. All of which have been covered by multiple musicians over the years.

I've spent the last few months immersing myself in blues. It started as a personal research project -- a rediscovery of the historical source of classic rock which I love so much.

In my prior naivety , I had assumed rock had it's origins in the likes of Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly, J. P. Richardson, Elvis Presley, etc.

Then I discovered Robert Johnson, the unquestionable grandfather of rock.

I've listened to his 29 recorded songs, circa 1936, repeatedly, and his influence upon modern rock is unmistakable.

To begin this thread, I present Robert Johnson's Crossroad Blues:

and the perfect tribute by Eric Clapton and Cream (1968):

There is a myth that Robert Johnson sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his talent. This is impossible: nothing this Good can arise from Evil.

I will follow up with more if there is interest. In the mean time, I'll leave you with this (ragtime, not blues) :

Johnson was astonishing, I only encountered him about fifteen years ago, but quickly realized he was a super singer and musician.

This is may fave Johnson track, his vocal range is impressive.

Terraplane Blues

I also started to explore Fats Waller, another absolute genius who sadly left us too young, this reminds me of Philadelphia backstreet blues bars of which I frequented occasionally.

Dinah

If you have a small party putting Waller on at lowish-med volume always works, it very good party music, creates an atmosphere of joy, liveliness.

Fats Waller came out with some pretty fun hits. Although I would categorize his stuff more as jazz/swing. Another blues artist people sometimes overlook is Freddie King.

The guy is an absolute legend with that guitar!
