Hi, I am writing a two page double spaced paper on Logic Gates in everyday life. I saw the thread where somebody asked a similar question, but what I am looking for is: what everyday items use logic gate chips.

 

In the computer you just used to write this posting. I guess you will find some. These circuits are still used. But they are for the most replaced with microcontrollers and other programable logic.

 

There's a difference between "logic gates" and "logic gate chips". Which is your paper focusing on?

Not really.

What others are trying to tell you is that the term "logic gates" refers to the function of the circuitry, not the hardware itself.

The function of logic has been provided by almost every sort of electric/electronic system from the very beginning using switches and relays through every subsequent generation of components, tubes, semiconductor diodes, transistors, integrated circuits, large scale integrated circuits (LSI), very large scale integrated circuits (VLSI), microprocessors, and reduced instruction set controllers RISC.

That is because everyday life abounds richly with the need for such devices.

Look around you, wherever something is being controlled and/or the results displayed you will find hardware implementing logic gates.

Try casino machines, ticket machines, turnstile controls, counters, elevator controls....................

So which do you want, the hardware or the function?

If we exclude FPGAs, MCUs, CPLDs, ASIC, and other configurable (either mask or field or anywhere inbetween) logic, the use is probably fairly minimal, particularly in a world that is increasingly driven by small, battery-powered, mass-produced products (or mass-produced period, even if it's a good size appliance). The use of individual logic chips is going to see itself in low-volume production runs where the need for some glue logic exists but the volumes don't justify the NRE to use some type of configurable logic.

Now, if we include digital chips in general, then there aren't that many products any more that don't have them. Your coffee maker, your blender, your dishwasher, your stove, your car (many, many times over). Heck, there are processors in lots of disposable items.

 

Ok I understand much better that my paper needs a different topic than what I was going for.

My question was not clear because I did not know entirely what I was asking about.

That's part of the learning process. Take your best swing, learn how bad a swing it was, and then take a better swing. So use the new information you've gained and revise your topic choice and come back with that. It may take a few cycles, but that's okay.
