that is really helpful, as i can see each stage where you took the equation,
regarding the other question why do i think 14 is greater than 0, i was told to look at any positive number as a minima and a negative number as a maxima. This may not be the case or it might be more of a generalised observation.

I can guess a test for concavity, which suggests either a min or a max.
(Sign of the second derivative)
I can guess, too. But he needs to make his reasoning clear so that whomever is grading his work can determine whether or not he understands, or is even aware, of the concepts involved. Otherwise he is letting his grade ride on the grader's crystal ball and guess work. That's not engineering.

His work, as presented, has a single 14 in it, namely the denominator of his solution for where the min/max occurs. So if he just states that it is a minima because 14 is grater than zero, the most justifiable interpretation for the grader to make is that the person apparently believes that it is somehow a minima if the denominator in that expression is positive.

What does it mean "to look at any positive number"?

3/14 is a positive number. So does that mean a minima?

Your answer never mentioned ANYTHING about a second derivative, let alone what the second derivative is, or at what point you are looking at the second derivative. You just, out of the blue, talk about 14 being greater than 0.

Your goal should be to provide a convincing case to the grader that your work is correct and that it is based on a correct understanding and application of the concepts.

I agree with that and wonder if English is not his first language.
It could also be he is very new to technical writing.
I use the words "he" and "his" above in the gender-neutral sense.

Quite possible that either or both of those are true, though I suspect that the latter is likely the more dominant, in which case now is a very good time to learn.

I am new to technical writing and new to lots of these subjects that i am attempting to get an understanding of.
My issue is i have an online tutor who does not reply very quickly and he doesnt always explain why we are doing something just that this is how you should do it. I am trying to do what i can with what i am given, although i realised i need to be finding out my own information to try to get a better basis of these subjects. it feels like each area is very large and i am asked to just scratch the surface of these topics.

Hi,

Yes actually a lot of times you have to look around for information when you have to design something or write something up. That's always part of the job :)
