"customizable audio effects" project

Years (maybe over a decade) ago I was looking into developing a product based on an audio dsp that could be "programmed" with various traditional effects (reverb, vocoder etc) from a PC gui. To be absolutely clear, it wasn't an interface. None of the PC power was used for audio processing, and once the "programming" was complete the unit could be disconnected from the PC and used independently.

It looks like it might be worthwhile to look into this again. What chip manufacturers should I look into? What are their reputations?

Thanks so much

I once made a voice announciator for telephone caller ID. If the phone number was on a known list, it would announce the party calling. Otherwise, it announced the phone number.

For prerecorded messages, look up Nuvoton/Windbond ISD ChipCorder.

Certainly the very first step is to decide just what effects are to be produced, and then to discover what actual actions are needed to produce those effects. Up until then you have a pretty box that can do nothing. Some effects are obvious and simple,, like FUZZ and assorted distortions, while others are a challenge to produce with electronics( Flanging, reverb/echo, and pitch change.)
