Reality shows are anything but reality shows.

Like Pawn Stars. The person bringing in the item of interest has to wait around forever as some production aids research the piece, the backstory. Write queue cards and film dozens of takes as Rick and friends try to say what was written while they hold or point at the item. The negotiation is real(ish). The guest is paid some nominal amount for their time to be on the show whether they sell the item or not. If the person is local, they are asked to come back on a filming day and the setup story is already written. In this case, the "expert friend" is already on site.

American Pickers offers the owner of the picked site $1200 if they agree to sell something during the filmed pick.

The Storage Wars scripts and mysterious finds are are all setups - plenty of online documentation, lawsuits, BS

Oak Island producers have to a pitch an annual plot-line to the production company to get funding. The script can be changed if something is actually found but, there are lots of hours of content to fill and make you stay in your seat during each commercial break so micro-cliffhangers are written, trinkets found, mysteries added, water flow or unexpected rock problem.

Agreed, but at least something like Oak Island is more entertaining than Real Housewives or those kinds of shows. Oak Island is like the old Orange County Choppers show, they make money on tours and merchandise also.

Even Orange County choppers had their script - every episode had a disagreement on design, fabrication method or decoration method and there was always one part in danger of arriving late and possibly disappointing the customer's ultra-firm due date. But still fun to see the different designs and fabrication methods evolve into a bike.

Orange County only designed and tacked together the bikes they made. They were then sent out to get fully fabricated and finished. To most of the bike comunity(at least real get your hands dirty bikers) OC bikes were like jokes or cartoons, not real riding bikes. They did sell some riding models, but they didn't make them those were farmed out.
