Do you know what the inductance of your toroid and of what material it is made?

Just have to note that if an antenna made of 60 feet of wire and is tuned with a fixed loading coil it isn't really of random length. It is 60 feet of wire. Yes, sometimes I am too picky at times.

 

the main reason for using a ferite toroid in a crystal radio is size. ferite toroids have more loss than air core coils, and less "Q" (less sharp tuning) .
