connecting car button to RF remote

so I hope this is the right place. im having electronic cutouts installed into my exhaust system. the cutouts are controlled by via RF remote. now instead of carrying around this extra rf remote or trying not to misplace it in the car, I was wondering if it would be possible to connect it a button already in the car, and what would be needed.

for example, lets say I want to use the mute button on the steering wheel controls (since they don't work for my aftermarket radio). I don't mind mounting the remote under the dash somewhere, and hard wiring the mute button to the remote but I don't know whats needed. lets say the remote runs off a 3v battery.

If the remote uses just a simple normally open push button switch then it should be possible to simply place another momentary push button normally open switch in parallel with it. All depends on the remote and how it is configured. As to the battery? With regular use the battery should last a few years about like the battery for a key fob used for keyless entry. Yes, you could likely use a 3.3 volt regulator or a similar supply driven off the existing automotive system but you need to ask yourself if it's worth it. If your existing mute button has easily accessible wiring and is the same type as used in the remote, normally open momentary push button as an example then it should be able to be used, again, all of this depends on the remote.

so I just looked online and saw how the rf remote works. its a 2 button switch. hold 1 button and it opens the butterfly (let it go when it has the sound that you want) and hold the other button to close the butterfly (let it go when it has the sound that you want) which is even better... because there a volume up and volume down button on the steering wheel, so now, when I want the car louder volume up, when I want it quieter....volume down.

As long as the two buttons on the remote share a common and the buttons on the remote share a common then it should work but again, without physically seeing the remote or the volume up / down configuration it's is hard to say.

Apparently cutouts have come a long way. Last one I installed was on a friend's 49 Ford 239 Cubic Inch flat head V8 using a steel cable which terminated in the glove compartment. You needed a passenger to open and close it or stop, slide over and open or close it. :) That was around 1963.

My "ONE TIME" experience with steering wheel controls taught me that there are a series of resistors all with a common point of connection. To turn up the volume of a radio you hold the "Volume UP" key and it presents a specific resistance that the radio sees and does something with it. maybe it's a part of a voltage divider network and the radio sees a change in voltage. Push the "Volume Down" button and you present a different resistance on the same line. Since I don't recall for sure I can only say that I THINK the "Mode" button used a different line. I did install an aftermarket radio with steering wheel control capabilities, so I DID see those resistances. But all that is from memory. But on my wife's car, I think it's possible you could modify something. Perhaps a couple comparators, but without a diagram of your wheel and your cutout, I'd be guessing.
